What Makes an Evaporator Coil Ice Over?

Ice on the evaporator is a symptom, never the disease. The usual culprits: leaking door gaskets loading the box with humid air, a defrost cycle that isn’t completing (failed heater, stuck timer, bad termination switch), low refrigerant charge dropping the coil temperature too far, or airflow blocked by product stacked against the coil. Once ice starts, it insulates the coil, which drops capacity, which lengthens run times, which builds more ice, until the box can’t hold temperature at all, typically during a busy weekend when the door swings most. If you see frost or ice on the coil or ceiling around it, that’s a call to commercial refrigeration repair now, while it’s a service visit and not a product-loss event. This is also where drain lines fail in a uniquely maddening way: in a freezer, the drain line runs through below-freezing space, and if its heat tape fails, the melt water refreezes inside the pipe.
