What Separates a Real Tune-Up From a Drive-By Special?

A real AC tune-up takes 60-90 minutes and includes coil cleaning, refrigerant charge verification against manufacturer specs, an under-load capacitor test, and condensate drain clearing. A drive-by special takes twenty minutes, swaps a filter, hoses the condenser, and leaves, which is how two “$99 tune-ups” can be completely different products.

Boston’s AC tune-up market runs $99-$200, and the price alone tells you almost nothing. Some $99 visits are genuine loss-leaders performed properly; others are sales calls wearing a tune-up’s clothes. Since your air conditioner sits idle for eight months and then gets asked to perform through a July heat wave, the difference between those two visits often shows up as a breakdown on the hottest week of the year, or as water on your finished basement floor. Here’s what should actually happen during the visit.

What’s on a Legitimate 21-Point Checklist?

  5. Airflow and controls: replace or check the filter, measure temperature split across the coil (typically 16-22°F), verify thermostat operation, and lubricate motors where applicable.

If the technician never attached gauges, never opened the electrical panel, and never touched the drain line, you didn’t get a tune-up, you got a rinse.

Why Is Refrigerant Charge Verification the Step That Gets Skipped?

Because it takes time and skill. Verifying charge means letting the system run long enough to stabilize, taking real measurements, and doing arithmetic, versus eyeballing it and moving on to the next appointment. But charge is where efficiency lives: a system even modestly undercharged loses cooling capacity and makes the compressor run hotter and longer, and the compressor is the single most expensive component in the system. Low charge also means a leak, since refrigerant doesn’t get “used up”, a proper tune-up flags that leak in May instead of letting the compressor grind itself down until August. The capacitor test matters for the same reason: a weak capacitor is a $20 part that, when it fails on a 95-degree day, takes out your cooling during the exact week every HVAC company in Boston is booked solid.

Below $99, look hard at what’s included; above $200, you should be getting documented readings, photos, and a written report. Timing matters more than people think: book in April or May, before the first heat wave, when schedules are open and any problem found can be fixed at leisure. The worst time to discover a weak capacitor or a low charge is the same week everyone else discovers theirs.

One more honesty note: a tune-up should end with findings, not a scripted upsell. Measured readings, microfarads, superheat, temperature split, are evidence. “This whole system is on its last legs” without numbers is a sales pitch.
